Is dual nationality recognized around the world?
There's some information about specific countries about this on the Chinese version of this site, but it would be better to go through the original data which is much more thorough. The data for this map comes from the Citizenship Laws of the World. (Green = dual nationality is fine; Yellow = dual nationality is possible with restrictions; Red = dual nationality is not possible.)
Suffice it to say that nationality laws are extremely complicated, different in almost every country, and impossible to summarize briefly. However, we can conclude from a thorough review of the data at the link above that Taiwan is one of very, very few countries that has different standards for its own nationals and immigrants naturalizing from other countries.
In almost all countries, either everyone can have dual citizenship or no one can, and most of the yellow countries above are yellow simply because they allow dual nationality until the age of majority, after which people must choose one or the other.
The trend, however, is clear. The Americas, Western Europe, and Australia all recognize dual nationality, and even South Korea removed a similar restriction on their own nationality law on 2008 so that immigrants may obtain Korean nationality without giving up the nationality of their home country. It's time for Taiwan to step up and continue on that path by allowing dual nationality for immigrants here!
